Joseph Cortina is an artist working in painting, drawing, sculpture, digital media and exhibit design.
His creations are a testament to his fascination with movement, energy, and the interplay of time and space.
Drawing from his background in animation and film, where images are created at 24, 30, and 60 frames a second, Joe's paintings aim to encapsulate that kinetic energy within a single frame. He has exhibited both his paintings and digital work in the DC area, with the Washington Post describing his work as "painterly yet precise".
After studying painting and printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University, Joe started his career as a director in broadcast television working for NBC News and NBC Sports. In 1999 he formed Cortina Productions, a media design and production company specializing in museums. Joe has been the guiding creative force of Cortina Productions whose immersive and interactive installations include such museums as International Spy Museum, the updated Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, National Museum of African American History and Culture, The Muhammad Ali Center, The Aquarium of the Pacific and seven Presidential Libraries. His work has received more than 60 industry awards and 5 National Emmys.
